Abstract
Mass migration of Italians to both the USA and Australia gave rise to what became known as 'the Italian problem'. When Italian migrants arrived in the new country they carried with them their own set of religious beliefs and customs that differed noticeably from those of the pre-existing Irish-dominated Catholic Church.
